CHESTNUT HILL -- As the central administration of the Archdiocese of Boston prepared to leave its long-time Brighton location, Boston College released its updated plans for the property that was purchased from the archdiocese.
Over the next 10 years, Boston College will build housing for an additional 1,280 undergraduate students, according to the June 17 statement. The completion of the decade-long Institutional Master Plan will allow BC to house 100 percent of its undergraduate students.
Rooms for 500 students will be built on the property purchased from the archdiocese, which BC now calls its Brighton Campus. Space for the first 150 beds will be built within the first three years while the other 350 beds will be built within the next 10 years.
The project, which is expected to cost more than $1 billion, also includes a 55,000-square-foot Fine Arts/Museum complex with an auditorium, Jesuit housing on Foster Street in Brighton, a parking garage and an athletics center with a baseball, softball and multi-purpose field for intramural sports.
“What we are proposing, especially in regard to undergraduate housing, is a win-win for Boston College, the surrounding neighborhood, and the city of Boston,” said BC president William P. Leahy, S.J. “This plan reflects BC’s longstanding commitment to be a good neighbor and to continue providing a quality educational experience true to our Jesuit, Catholic heritage.”
The school has revised its plan for the Brighton property to accommodate concerns of nearby residents. They have eliminated the 200,000-square-foot field house within the Brighton athletics center and one intramural playing field from the project. In addition, they have relocated the baseball field further away from neighbors’ homes and moved the Fine Arts District nearer to the former cardinal’s residence.
