Beyond the textbook in Newburyport
At Immaculate Conception School in Newburyport, students are learning that education can extend far beyond textbooks and traditional classroom assignments.
From the earliest grades through eighth grade, students engage in hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics experiences designed to build curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and perseverance. Whether they are coding, designing, building, testing, or revising, students are encouraged to ask questions, explore possibilities, and solve authentic problems.
As technology continues to change the way people learn, work, and communicate, Immaculate Conception School is also taking a thoughtful approach to artificial intelligence in education. Faculty members are exploring age-appropriate and responsible ways AI can support learning while helping students understand its capabilities, limitations, and ethical implications.
The goal is not simply to teach students how to use emerging technology, but to help them develop the judgment to decide when technology is useful, when it is not, and how it can be used responsibly.
Technology is integrated across grade levels and subject areas at IC. In the school's 1:1 learning environment, students use digital tools to research, communicate, create, collaborate, and demonstrate understanding. At the same time, technology is not viewed as a replacement for strong teaching, hands-on learning, or personal relationships.
The school's Innovation and Science Labs provide additional opportunities for students to work through the engineering design process. Projects may include coding, robotics, circuits, 3D design and printing, engineering prototypes, multimedia, and other interdisciplinary challenges.
Through STREAM activities and design-thinking projects, students learn that successful problem solving often requires patience, flexibility, teamwork, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. These experiences help build confidence, resilience, communication skills, and the ability to adapt when a solution is not immediately apparent.
IC's focus on STEM and technology is also connected to its broader mission of educating the whole child. Students are encouraged to consider how their ideas and creations can serve others and contribute positively to their communities.
That balance between tradition and innovation is part of the school's identity. Immaculate Conception School is celebrating 143 years of Catholic education while continuing to look toward the future.
Located in downtown Newburyport, the co-educational school serves approximately 200 students from preschool through eighth grade from communities throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
