You come here for a reason
When you come to Portsmouth Abbey, you're embarking on a genuine search for meaning and purpose. When you are centered, you are ready to grow, lead and rise. At the Abbey, community is at the heart of everything we do. Ours is a culture of joy, respect, and inclusivity. We want you -- and everyone around you -- to feel seen, supported, and at home. At the same time, we celebrate your individuality. Catholic means universal, and we welcome students from all backgrounds, as Jesus was welcoming to all people. We affirm that each person is made in the image and likeness of God and is endowed with inherent human dignity and infinite worth. This foundation prepares you to live with purpose -- shaping the impact you'll have on others and the world.
As Portsmouth Abbey School celebrates its 100th year of service to the Catholic faith, we reaffirm our mission to help young men and women grow in knowledge and grace. Originally, Portsmouth Priory, the Benedictine boarding and day school, embraces the Catholic faith while nurturing reverence for God and the human person, love of learning, and commitment to community life. "Love of learning and the desire for God" are joined in the Benedictine tradition. Love of learning is grounded in wonder, undertaken in humility, and fueled by hunger for truth. Students are called to a close reading of classic texts and critical engagement with the written word. Our research-driven science program enables students to be keen observers of the world around them. We foster engagement in fine arts and athletics as key dimensions of human excellence. Education in the Catholic intellectual tradition forms us in the things that matter -- truth, goodness, and beauty.
Portsmouth Abbey is a premier New England boarding and day school situated on 525 acres along Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay. Recognized for its unique blend of a classical education in the Catholic intellectual tradition and timeless Benedictine values, an Abbey education emphasizes academic excellence, character development, college preparation, and growth in knowledge and grace. As one of our 350 students, you will be respected, known, and encouraged to take risks in a kind and joyful community. The trust and support of our faculty produce moments of self-discovery that will inspire you in ways you cannot yet imagine.
Because of the school's size, students can become leaders and active members of the campus community. The Abbey provides 45 athletics teams, diverse community service programs, many off-campus enrichment opportunities, a state-of-the-art squash and fitness center, a multi-sport synthetic turf field and world-class golf, sailing and equestrian facilities. Our college counseling officers guide students from sophomore year through college acceptance and beyond, with many graduates attending the nation's top colleges and universities.
Our shared life of study, prayer, and recreation sustains a community characterized by friendship and joy. Called to live in mutual service to each other, we seek the growth of our members as individuals, while advancing the common good. We nurture the talents of each of our students for energetic leadership and service in our own community and throughout the world. Our alumni will tell you that your journey as a Raven will differ from any other high school or boarding school experience. There is no doubt that this is where you will discover the person you were meant to be. Soar with us.
Join us Saturday, Oct. 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for our Open House!
