Round-up of archdiocesan Thanksgiving Day football games

The 38th meeting of these two rivals led to a shutout victory for the Hawks from Westwood by a score of 17-0 at Danvers. The victory, the first in five years, allowed Xaverian to have a three-way tie for the Catholic Conference Title with Prep and BC High and earn an appearance in the Division 1 Play-off against Everett (10-1) on Tuesday night, Nov. 29. Xaverian, led by Charlie Stevenson, prevailed 20-14 and went to the Division 1 Superbowl on Saturday, Dec. 3 at Brockton. The Hawks lost to Brockton 14-7 and end the season at 9-3-1. Last years record was 9-3. The Eagles from Danvers, led by Coach Jim O’Leary had a great season too, winning eight games and losing three.

Catholic Memorial vs. Boston College High

At Boston College’s Alumni Stadium, the CM Knights, led by Alex Campea, and the BC High Eagles, led by first year coach Ron St. George met on Thanksgiving Eve. The Eagles scored touchdowns in the first three periods and won the game 40-6. BC High got off to a rough start, not having a home field due to delayed renovations and having a new coach after the 41 year Jim Cotter era. In mid-October, the Eagles were 1-4; thereafter, the team won the next three to even things out. The Eagles end the season at 6-5 and a three-way tie for the Catholic Conference Title. The Knights had a winning season too, at 6-4.

Malden Catholic vs. Bishop Fenwick

Playing at home in Peabody, the Fenwick Crusaders defeated the Malden Catholic Lancers by a score of 34-6. Fenwick, led by Coach David Woods, ends the season with eight wins and three losses. Malden Catholic, led by first year Coach Joe Gaff (the third in three years) ends the season with one win and 10 losses.

Archbishop Williams vs. Cardinal Spellman

Playing at home in Braintree, the Archbishop Williams Bishops triumphed over the Spellman Cardinals by a score of 29-15. At halftime, Spellman had a 9-7 lead. In the third quarter, the Bishops battled back, scoring two touchdowns to seal the win and advance to a Division 3 semifinal on Tuesday evening, Nov. 29 at Endicott College in Beverly. The Bishops defeated Tyngsboro by a score of 28-20 and advanced to the Division 3 Superbowl last Saturday evening at Curry College in Milton. In a hard fought game, the Bishops lost to Abington 21-20. Archbishop Williams, led by Coach Bill Kinsherf, end the season with a 9-2-1 record. Spellman ends the season at 2-7-1.

Central Catholic vs. Andover

Playing at home in Lawrence, Central Catholic defeated their Thanksgiving rival, Andover, by a score of 22-6. Central Catholic, led by Coach Chuck Adamopoulos, ends the season with six wins and four losses. Andover ends at 4-7.

Arlington Catholic vs. Matignon

The Arlington Catholic Cougars and the Matignon Warriors met at Russell Field in Cambridge on Thanksgiving morning. The Cougars won the battle by a score of 27-7. The Cougars end the season at 2-8. The Warriors, led by Coach David Mosca, end the season at 3-7.

Austin Prep vs. Savio Prep

The Cougars from Austin Prep came over to Sartori Stadium in East Boston and dominated the Savio Spartans with a shutout score of 30-0. For Austin Prep Coach Bill Maradei, the win was the 200th in his career. Back on Thanksgiving Day, 1995, he coached Savio. The Spartans defeated Don Bosco giving him the 100th win of his career.

His career record now stands at 200-79-4. Austin Prep ends the season at 8-3. Savio, led by Coach Bill Snow, ends the season at 3-8.

Lowell Catholic vs. Pelham, NH

At Cawley Stadium in Lowell, Lowell Catholic lost to their out-of-state rival by a score of 14-10. Led by Coach Tim Walsh, they end the season with only one win and nine losses. Pelham ends the season at 5-5.

Pope John XXXIII vs. Chelsea High School

At Chelsea High School, the Pope John Tigers won a hard fought game over a much revived Chelsea High football team by a score of 28-27. The Chelsea Red Devils dominated the first half with the Tigers trailing 14- 8. In the second half, a game winning touchdown pass with seven seconds left to play gave the win to the Tigers. The Tigers, led by Coach Paul Sobolewski had a great season, winning nine games and losing two. Chelsea had a great season too, winning seven and losing three.

Trinity Catholic vs. St. Clement

Playing at home in Medford, the St. Clement Anchormen lost to their Thanksgiving Day rival, the Trinity Catholic Falcons by a score of 44-0. Unfortunately, the Anchormen, led by Coach Colin Walsh repeated last season’s record of one win and 10 losses. The Falcons, led by Coach Steve McGonigle reversed last season’s record of 3-8 to 8-3 this season.

Cathedral High School vs. Whittier

The Cathedral High Panthers trekked up to Haverhill on Thanksgiving morning and battled it out with the Whittier Wildcats. The Panthers lost by a score of 26-6 but not without a valiant effort to at least get on the board. In the fourth period, trailing 26-0, one Panther scored a 13-yard touchdown run with 7:05 left to play. The Cathedral Panthers, led initially by Coach Mark James, had a great season, winning six games and losing five. Prior to the Thanksgiving Day game, their record boasted a five game winning streak. For the Whittier Wildcats, the Thanksgiving Day win was the fourth straight. They end the season at an outstanding 10-1.

Marian vs. Nipmuc

Playing at home in Framingham, the Marian High Mustangs lost to Nipmuc by a score of 26-19. Led by Coach Phil Marchegiani, the Mustangs end the season with four wins and six losses. Nipmuc ends at 3-7.

St. Mary vs. Lynn Tech

Playing at Chelsea High School on Thanksgiving eve, the St. Mary Spartans defeated their neighboring rival, Lynn Tech, by a score of 42-18. On Tuesday evening, Nov. 29, the Spartans, playing in a Division 3A Semi-final, defeated Georgetown by a score of 31-14. The win allowed the Spartans to advance to the Division 3A Superbowl last Saturday afternoon at Arlington High School. The Spartans not only won the game and the school’s first ever Super Bowl Title, but shut out South Shore by a score of 21-0. Led by Coach Mike Stellato, St. Mary ends the season at a remarkable 12-1. Lynn Tech ends the season at 4-7.

Hudson Catholic vs. Valley Tech

The Hudson Catholic Green Wave lost to their rival, Valley Tech by a score of 14-6. The Green Wave, led by Coach Tom Grasso, end the season at 2-9. Valley Tech ends at 5-6.
