Bishop Lennon resting at residence in Cleveland following cardiac procedure

CLEVELAND (CNS) -- Bishop Richard G. Lennon of Cleveland was released from the hospital Feb. 8, three days after undergoing an emergency heart procedure.

The Cleveland Diocese released a statement Feb. 9 saying Bishop Lennon was resting comfortably in his residence.

"The bishop sincerely thanks all those who offered him prayers and well-wishes during his hospitalization," the statement said.

Diocesan spokesman Robert Tayek said Bishop Lennon, 68, was hospitalized after he experienced chest pains about 7:45 a.m. Feb 5 while working in his office. Local media reported that he did not experience a heart attack.

He was transported by ambulance to nearby St. Vincent Charity Medical Center where he underwent cardiac catherization. Stents -- small metal mesh tubes -- were inserted into two coronary arteries to improve blood flow.

No timeline for the bishop's return to work was announced.

Bishop Lennon has been treated for cardiac issues in the past. A native of Arlington, Massachusetts, he was an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Boston prior to his appointment to Cleveland in 2006.
