NEWTON — Archbishop Seán P. O’Malley has appointed two administrators who will oversee the reconfiguration of four of the seven parishes in Newton.

In December, the archdiocese announced that the pastors of the four parishes would leave their positions. In their place, one administrator was to be appointed to head both St. Bernard and Corpus Christi parishes, and a second administrator was to head both Mary Immaculate of Lourdes and St. Philip Neri parishes. The administrators will determine how the facilities of their parishes can best be used to benefit the Catholic community of Newton going forward.

St. Bernard and Mary Immaculate parishes were originally named for closure in the archdiocese reconfiguration plan released in May.

A Jan. 6 statement from the archdiocese said that Father James Mahoney will become administrator of St. Bernard and Corpus Christi parishes effective Jan. 19. Father Mahoney will continue in his assignment as director of the Clergy Support and On-going Formation Office until a successor is named for that position.

Father Paul Cornell will be appointed administrator of St. Philip Neri parish Jan. 19 and administrator of Mary Immaculate of Lourdes on Jan. 24.
